Community RePaint Wirral Helps Transform Veolia’s GoodBox Reuse Initiative

Community RePaint Wirral has proudly supported a new circular economy initiative in the Liverpool. The GoodBox, an innovative reuse container operated by Veolia, is colourful and eye-catching thanks to Recipro providing preloved paint.

The GoodBox is a travelling container that will be stationed at various Household Waste Recycling Centres across Merseyside and Halton. Its purpose is simple: to match unwanted items donated by local residents with the needs of community groups, charities, schools, and social enterprises. The initiative is being rolled out to ensure valuable materials are reused rather than thrown away, giving them a meaningful second life.

The Good Box is a project created in partnership with Veolia and Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority.

Lesley Worswick, Chief Executive of Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority, said:

“We’re absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with Veolia to give our residents’ unwanted items a new lease of life. The GoodBox is a fantastic way to show that one person’s spring clean can be another person’s gold mine. By working together, we’re making it easier than ever to keep good-quality materials in circulation.”

The GoodBox operates on a simple model:

  • A community organisation applies to “adopt” The GoodBox.
  • Their requested items—such as tools, gardening equipment, craft materials, or DIY supplies—are listed on the GoodBox chalkboard.
  • Local residents visiting the HWRC donate directly to that project by placing requested items into the container.
  • At the end of the month, the adopting organisation collects the items for use in their project.

To support the initiative’s launch and community appeal, Community RePaint Wirral provided reused paint to help decorate The GoodBox. Supplying preloved paint for The GoodBox was a natural fit for Community RePaint Wirral run by Recipro. They diverts large volumes of leftover paint from the waste stream—over 1,000,000 litres and counting—turning potential waste into a valuable community resource.

Why I am a ReColour Stockist and advocate!

Since 2020, Lulu has been using ReColour chalk paint from our remanufacturing centre in Wirral for her projects and upcyling commissions and she’s not looked back! “I am so glad I found it Rebecca and her paints!” “It’s my go to paint, and having used a fair few more popular brands, that are sometimes twice as expensive, I always settle on ReColour” “It helps the planet. There is a lovely range of beautiful colours.”

So Lulu, what where your first impressions of using our ReColour chalk paint?

“It goes on like a dream, it really does.” “These paints make my job as a painter so much easier!! You know the warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you spread butter on bread and it’s EXACTLY the right consistency so it goes own without making the bread crumble ? That is how I feel when I use ReColour paints. They go on like a dream. They cover just right. Sure I’ll do another coat, but the satisfaction I feel from that first coat is just amazing.”

“When I opened my shop, it made sense to stock this paint as I am a big fan! And an advocate.”

So, now you’re a stockist, why should other people consider buying ReColour chalk paint?

“Well it is remanufactured for a start. Waste paint is converted to an eco friendly low VOC child friendly chalk paint.
* I support a small business when I buy from them. The exceptional service, personal attention, advice and just a general interest in what I am painting is unmatched. Rebecca is a great person to buy from. And I’m very happy to be a small part of her journey. And even happier she is a bigger part of mine.
* Value for money!!! A 750ml tin is £10. You heard! £10. Bigger more known brands can be about £25, or more for the same quantity. So even if you weren’t too sure about trying a newer not that well known brand, you are not breaking your bank!!!! And I promise you, once you try it, you will be addicted!”

Where can people find you?

“If you have any questions about this paint, or have an upcycle project you’ve not got round to and need advice, or want to see my furniture that has been painted in ReColour paints to see how they look and feel before you buy, pop into my shop at The Barras on Kent Street (type Lulu Makes Things in Google Maps and it will bring you to my shop!). I’m open every Sat-Sun 10.30am to 4pm”

Yellow Submarine

Dad of two Dean (@diy_with_daddy on Instgram) has gone all out  transforming his kids’ bedroom into a unique and stylish space full of personality.

Dean visited his local Community RePaint scheme, Recipro on the Wirral and picked up all the paint he needed for this remarkable metamorphosis for less that £30.00.

As Dean has demonstrated simple accents like hand painted wall art, stickers and painted shelving can infuse a room with character and charm and we love it!

Cheltenham Paint Festival uses recycled paint

Cheltenham Paint Festival Street Art, community mural

The Cheltenham Paint Festival is a free art trail, showcasing a wide range of high-quality artwork in various painting styles from national and international artists. This year, 125 artists attended to paint in 60 different locations around Cheltenham, providing a colourful 5-mile walk for locals and visitors.

The festival has been featured in The Times, The Telegraph and has been part of a 2-hour long feature on Sky Arts.

With the global pandemic ongoing, the festival organisers said it was more important than ever for the paint festival to go ahead, to brighten up the local community and bring some colour into people’s lives.

However, this year, like many festivals around the country, it was scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With a reduced festival budget, the organisers required low-cost paint.

Artist and Founder of the festival, Andy Davies, contacted Community RePaint to purchase 100 litres of affordable white paint to use at the festival. The central team passed the festival’s request onto Community RePaint Wirral, who was able to provide the festival with the paint at just £1 per litre, meaning it could still go ahead on a reduced budget.

Community RePaint Wirral is one of the biggest schemes on the Community RePaint Network. In 2019, the scheme redistributed over 104,000-litres of leftover paint to individuals and groups in the community. They were very proud to be supporting the 2020 edition of the Cheltenham Paint Festival.

Andy, the festival founder, told us “The delivery was great, the driver went out of the way to get them across the garden and put them on the drive which was much appreciated. The paint itself was excellent and so useful.”

The local community appreciate the art around the town, providing some light in such dark times. You can view a full gallery of the 2020 artwork on the Official Cheltenham Paint Festival website.

Tunnel transformed with paint for Waterways Action Squad

Based at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port and funded by Bank America and V., one of the first projects tackled by the Squad was the nearby canal bridge under the M53 motorway. Covered in graffiti, dirty and dark, it was in desperate need of a repaint, especially as the family boat trips from the Museum would pass under the bridge and staff would often have to go out early and scrub off obscene tags.

Now, thanks to Community RePaint Wirral, the tunnel has been transformed with a five-panel mural designed by the volunteers and inspired by the exhibits in the National Waterways Museum. Since the volunteers finished painting, the graffiti has gone and the tunnel is a much brighter and nicer place to be. What’s more the Council, so impressed by their work, offered to paint a coat of anti-graffiti paint over the mural.

Hazel Mayow, Volunteer Leader at The Waterways Trust: “We only had a very small budget and everyone was eager to get started. By sourcing paint from our local Community RePaint scheme, we were able to use a whole variety of colours and so not compromise on the design or have to wait months for funding,“ In addition, “Diverting second-hand paint from landfill was a great way for us to reinforce the environmental message of this project.”

Upcycling success with Project UP

Project UP is a furniture upcycling project run by Groundwork Cheshire. The project takes unwanted furniture destined for landfill, strips it back to its original state and then refinishes it with a modern twist. All of the upcycling work is carried out by a team of young volunteers including students from Wirral Met College and young unemployed people. Once an item is complete it is given to local families in need, free of charge.

In order to complete the work Project UP were in need of paint, so Community RePaint provided the perfect solution to meet their needs. Project UP has solely used paint provided by Community Repaint Wirral, run by Recipro City, and have found the variety of colours available has meant that they haven’t had to limit their designs, as can be seen from the pictures.

The project was initially funded by Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) and Veolia Environmental Services Community Fund. MRWA chief executive, Carl Beer said: “Project UP is a great example of how a relatively small amount of money – and a creative approach – can make a big difference to the lives of people in Merseyside communities.”

Project UP Manager, Jon Hutchinson said: “We are using furniture upcycling as a vehicle to create positive social change. The project teaches young people new skills, provides furniture to those in most need and reduces waste going to landfill. The transformation of the furniture is absolutely stunning and we are creating truly bespoke items that will look great in people’s homes. The work carried out by the team of young people is amazing and the results speak for themselves”.

“As a charitable project we are working on a tight budget and the cost of paint could have restricted us, but the affordable prices on offer meant this wasn’t the case. We first heard about the Community Repaint scheme through word of mouth and have been going back to Recipro City to get our paint ever since.’’
