For many years Hopwood Park in Heywood was neglected, but a fantastic community group The Friends of Hopwood Park have transformed the space, as they see the area as a valuable asset to the community. They believe the space should be utilised to give the best opportunity for residents to gain benefits from exercise, community cohesion, and well being.
Community RePaint Rochdale, who are run by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, lent a hand on the hottest day of the year, to paint the interior and some of the exterior of the community business. They gave the already popular Hopwood Cabin a fresh lick of paint, which you can see below.

Our scheme in Loughborough joined the network in 2018 and are run by The Exairo Trust. The Exaireo Trust provides temporary supported accommodation and a holistic service to single adults that are homeless. Their reuse project including their Community RePaint scheme provides work-based training to all of their residents, helping them to become economically independent in the future. Not only do they collect paint locally from traders, retailers and manufacturers, they also collect paint from households via the Whetstone recycling centre.
Next time you are painting, visit the scheme and support what they do, whilst still getting quality paint at affordable prices. You can visit their page on our website to find out more about what they do.

The Green Machine, who run Community RePaint East Berkshire, collect over 50,000 litres of paint a year. The majority of their paint comes from local recycling centres where they collect paint which has been dropped off by local residents. Their paint is available to individuals and groups for £1-£2 per litre. Due to the large volumes of paint they receive there is a large variety of colours and types available. If you need paint you can call in to the scheme during their opening hours.

The Law Leisure Learning home has the capacity to accommodate homeless members of the community and 14 ex-offending residents, who are referred to them from prisons. Using paint that they collect at their Community RePaint scheme, the team spent the day painting the dining hall, living area and the hallways. We think the results are amazing, all thanks to the great volunteers that took part in the day. Before picture – The living room After painting, no longer yellow! Cambridgeshire Community Reuse and Recycling Network (CCORRN) were joined by a team of nine Marks and Spencer volunteers, transforming the outside of their premises. A local artist Michelle Deyna-Hayward designed the piece, featuring a range of animals including unicorns, whilst also keeping the message of leftover paint clear. The enthusiastic volunteers spent the day filling in the design with bright colours, really brightening up the exterior. ALL of the paint used in the mural was from the scheme, so otherwise would have been wasted.
Reflecting on the mural Nikki DiGiovanni, Communications and Product Development at CCORRN said: ‘We are so pleased to have this support from Marks and Spencer. Their volunteers have allowed us to create a magical mural which we hope will spark local people’s imaginations’.
The volunteers were taking part in Marks and Spencer’s ‘Making Every Moment Special’ programme, in partnership with Neighbourly, an online giving platform which connects charities, businesses and communities. It’s one of Marks and Spencer’s most ambitious volunteer programmes to date, mobilising over 5,000 staff members from over 640 stores across the UK and pairing them with over 580 charity events.
Stay tuned as we will be uploading more pictures and videos next week!
