The team at Bridge Creative, who support adults with learning difficulties and autism to gain work experience, reach their potential and move into paid employment, linked up with Trades4Care for their decorating project.

Trades4Care support young people in need of work experience within the construction sector, with skills and mentoring opportunities, while providing community hubs, education buildings and care facilities with an affordable decorating service.

For the project, Bridge Creative opted for multiple colours of interior emulsion paint from our ReColour remanufactured range. The order was processed by our remanufacture centre run by Community RePaint Wirral. Once processed and packaged, the paint order was delivered directly to the door of Bridge Creative.

ReColour remanufactured paint is bulk produced from leftover paint that is filtered, treated and blended to produce a high-quality range of emulsion, masonry and chalk paint, available in over 20 colours. ReColour remanufactured paint is perfect for projects requiring more than 60 litres of paint and prices start from £1.20 per litre.

Charlie Wright, Co-founder and director at Trades4Care let us know:

“If we had bought all the materials at trade, our project would have cost approximately £1000. By using ReColour, from Community RePaint, including delivery, we were only charged £482.

“This is a massive saving for a Community Interest Company that is trying to support young kids with learning difficulties and autism.”

When asked about the overall experience using ReColour remanufactured paint, Ben Tinkler, Managing Director at Bridge Creative said:

“Using ReColour paint from Community RePaint has been really beneficial to our project. It has saved us a substantial amount of money and fits in with our company values and what we do.

“The quality of the paint has been excellent and is exactly the same as what we would have got if we were paying full price for new tins of paint.”

ReColour remanufactured paint used to brighten The Baby Room Exeter’s new space

Having moved into new premises in 2022, The Baby Room contacted Community RePaint to enquire and purchase affordable ReColour remanufactured emulsion paint for a decorating project to colour and update their new space.

The Baby Room is an independent space for new families in Exeter to receive support and help on their journeys into parenthood and offers regular sessions and activities for new parents to learn the necessary skills to help them along the way. It is a space for families to come, sit and feed, change nappies and have a rest.

Predominantly run by volunteers, who are parents themselves, The Baby Room’s weekly timetable is bursting with things to do, groups, workshops and classes – all to help create positive bonds between baby, family and community.

The team behind the scenes at The Baby Room opted for the popular ‘Brilliant White’ colour to brighten the space and reflect the natural daylight from the big windows into the rooms of their new building. The order was processed by our remanufacture centre run by Community RePaint Cambridgeshire. Once processed and packaged, the paint order was delivered directly to the door of The Baby Room’s new HQ.

Jen Harris and Gill Travis, who run The Baby Room let us know:

“Over the last five years, we have run The Baby Room Exeter (CIC) project from a room in a local primary school. Prior to this, we were based in a scout hut for seven years! We outgrew the rooms, amassed too many nappies and slings, and had to find a new HQ.

“Our new home on 23 Paris Street is huge! It’s a three-floor building that hasn’t seen much love for a while after being earmarked but overlooked, for redevelopment a few years ago. It is the perfect space for us, and is located just a stepping stone away from Exeter’s busy high street, meaning we can be easily accessed by everyone instead of being tucked away in a school in the suburbs.”

Before the project commenced

When asked how they first found out about Community RePaint, Jen let us know…

“I knew about Community Repaint as The Devon Real Nappy Project, Exeter Real Nappy Initiative and Devon County Council work together and help with ProperJob in Chagford [who host the West Devon Community RePaint scheme]. I knew I wanted to use leftover or recycled paint as it fits with our ethos of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’.

“The price point was perfect as we don’t have much money and funding takes a long time to organise and arrive. We needed to spend our own funds on this and were working to a very tight deadline as we were effectively homeless until the space was ready to move into.”

During decorating

Exeter Library of Things also helped The Baby Room with its decorating project by providing brushes, trays, rollers and ladders for the renovation. These items were borrowed rather than bought, helping with costs while avoiding unnecessary ownership – linking directly with this Community Interest Company’s values.

The finished space

When asked what’s next for The Baby Room Exeter, Jen and Gill responded:

“We’ve still got work to do and we are waiting for some funding so we can crack on with ‘phase two’ which will see us open a ‘Preloved’ maternity and nursing clothes room, complete with fitting room, feeding area and consultation space. We are extremely grateful to Community Repaint for all they do and providing us with a sustainable way in which to decorate our space.”

What is remanufactured paint?

An estimated 50 million litres of household paint is wasted in the UK each year, that’s enough to fill 22 Olympic size swimming pools. With most of that paint sent for incineration, it’s a huge problem. With more individuals and businesses aware of their environmental impact, what solutions are out there to prevent the disposal of paint?

Left over paint ready to be remanufactured. recycling paint

There are currently 2 options, paint reuse and remanufacturing. Getting your paint reused can be as simple as offering your leftover paint to friends and of course, dropping it off at a Community RePaint drop off point. But what is remanufactured paint?

After realising the colossal amount of paint wasted in the UK, Newlife Paint decided to come up with a solution. It took 2 years of research and a lot of prototyping to successfully develop a process to convert leftover paint into a premium quality product.

How does it work?

Step 1: Leftover paint is collected from household waste recycling centres and businesses.

Step 2: This paint is then thoroughly checked, to make sure it can be remanufactured. This includes checking it has not gone off and hasn’t been contaminated.

Step 3: Next, the paint is filtered in large barrels, removing any dried paint and other small contaminants.

Step 4: Chemicals are added to the paint which will kill any bacteria within the paint and ensures its longevity amongst other things.

Step 5: The paint is then filtered again to produce its final container and sealed in its new containers, as a brand new paint!

Who produces it?

Under licence from Newlife Paints, the Community RePaint Network has two remanufacturing centres. They are hosted by Community RePaint Cambridgeshire, and Community RePaint Wirral. The remanufacturing centres use this process to create our remanufactured paint, ‘ReColour’. In 2021 they produced nearly 100,000 litres of ReColour, using 100% leftover paint.

ReColour has been the go-to option for hundreds of charities, schools, community organisations and religious groups. It has been used for decorating projects in primary schools, village halls, community projects, bringing local facilities back to life and brighten the lives of so many others.

Why does it matter?

With over 50 million litres of paint being wasted a year, there is a huge need for a solution. Remanufacturing paint can divert paint away from the waste streams and create an affordable option.

By making it easy for individuals and businesses to get their paint reused and remanufactured, we start to solve the problem. Creating a circular economy of paint, eventually leading to a huge reduction in paint waste.

If you want to get your leftover paint reused or remanufactured, find your nearest Community RePaint drop off point here.

If you don’t have a drop-off point in your area, let your local authority know you want one here.

How can ReColour paint improve your mood?

According to Country living, different colours have different effects on how you feel. For example, orange has been found to bring burst’s of energy and enthusiasm, where as red is known to raise blood pressure and irritability. This was an important factor when choosing colours for Aigburth Counselling and Psychotherapy in Liverpool when they started their new decorating project.

Aigburth Counselling and Psychotherapy ReColour work in progress

The team at Aigburth Counselling and Psychotherapy wanted to change their current dull, and boring room into a calming and comfortable environment. With 17+ colours to choose from, our ReColour remanufactured paint was a great choice. It is both affordable and great for the environment, and the team at Aigburth Counselling and Psychotherapy were delighted with the choice.

Rena, a member of staff at Aigburth Counselling and Psychotherapy, said:

It’s been an absolute pleasure dealing with Recolour. Everything from ordering to the delivery was done in such a helpful and friendly manner and to know that we are helping to reduce waste is fantastic!

ReColour paint used for new outdoor learning space in Lewisham

Using ReColour remanufactured paint, that would have otherwise gone to waste, the mural at Torridon Primary School in Lewisham truly represents the children and ethos of the new ‘Creative Corner’. Designed to uplift everyone that sees it, the mural was based on the children posing in superhero positions. The school collaborated with artist Peter Miller (known as Phyneart) to complete the work.

The project was started when the school’s art department wanted to give their children access to an outdoor learning space. Before they could start, they needed affordable paint that was durable and could stand against the Great British weather. ReColour masonry paint, remanufactured by Community RePaint Wirral, was the perfect option. Not only affordable, starting at just £1 per litre, but the best choice for exterior walls and great for the environment!

ReColour paint used to help save local facilites

After the Cullens beach facility and toilets were closed in June 2018, a group of locals rallied together to revive them. Led by Friends of Cullen, the community worked together to get the local public toilet facilities back open and used ReColour remanufactured paint to bring them back to life. The newly renovated facility has enabled everyone to enjoy the spectacular area and spend their entire day there.

With only a small budget, the group needed an affordable solution to paint the facilities. Community RePaint Wirral was on the job, providing Friends of Cullen with helpful advice and the perfect paint.

As it was such a large project, ReColour remanufactured paint became the best option. Produced in larger quantities, ReColour is created from leftover paints, filtered, treated and blended to create a range of high-quality emulsions, masonry and chalk furniture paint. Since 2015, over 500 community organisations have ordered ReColour. Friends of Cullen chose the exact colours and quantity of interior and exterior paint and had it delivered straight to their door.

Once the paint arrived, the project could begin. With all hands on deck, both the interior and exterior of the toilets got a fresh coat of paint… although they weren’t quite finished just yet. The children from the local primary school wanted to add something special. Each child painted what Cullen meant to them on a tile. Now fully open for the public to see, both the facilities and beautiful artwork bring a spark of joy to everyone who visits.

Annie Corcoran from the group had this to say about the project:

‘We are delighted and it really got the whole community involved. Thank you so much for the paint.’
